Photography Backdrop Size Guide: 8x10 vs 8x12 vs Custom
Share
Headline: The wrong backdrop size ruins more sessions than bad lighting. Here's how to pick the right one the first time.
Why Size Matters More Than You Think
A backdrop that's too small crops your subject's pose, forces you to shoot tight, and shows up in every reflection. One that's too large is a pain to transport, store and set up. Getting the size right is the cheapest upgrade you can make to your studio.
The Two Studio Standards: 8x10ft and 8x12ft
For most portrait and video work, 8x10ft is the workhorse size. It covers head-and-shoulders, half-body, and seated full-body shots with room to spare. It fits standard 10ft backdrop stands and rolls down to a manageable package for on-location jobs.
8x12ft adds two feet of width, which matters more than you'd expect: it gives you room for couples, groups, and poses with props. If you shoot families, maternity, or anything wider than a single seated subject, the extra width is worth it.
| Need | Recommended size |
|---|---|
| Head & shoulders, newborns | 8x10ft |
| Half-body, seated full-body | 8x10ft |
| Couples, maternity, small groups | 8x12ft |
| Full-body standing, tall subjects | 8x12ft or taller |
| Video / streaming | 8x10ft is usually enough |
Beyond 8x12: When to Go Custom
If you shoot full-length standing portraits with props, event backdrops, or want to cover an entire wall, custom sizes are the answer. Our Custom Photography Backdrop is built to your exact dimensions (up to 10 x 16.4 ft) on the same wrinkle-free microfiber as our standard sizes — perfect for studios with dedicated backdrop walls or event booths.
Seamless Paper: A Different Sizing Rule
Seamless paper follows its own logic: it comes in long rolls (ours are 107in wide x 32.8ft) and you tear off what you need, so "size" means width plus how many sessions you get per roll. It's ideal for full-body shots on a seamless curve — see our White Seamless Paper and Grey Seamless Paper options.
Don't Forget the Stand
A backdrop is only as stable as its stand. Our Adjustable Backdrop Stand Kit (10x10ft) supports both 8x10 and 8x12 backdrops, and pairs with Sandbags for safe indoor and outdoor setups.
The Bottom Line
- Studio portraits & video → 8x10ft
- Couples, families, wider poses → 8x12ft
- Walls, events, special setups → Custom
- Seamless full-body shots → 107in paper rolls
